Laser Scanning is the most accurate method for delivering BIM required for retrofit, refurbishment,
maintenance, FM, portfolio management and renovation projects.
There is no comparison with the level of data gathered during 3D laser scanning when compared to conventional building surveying techniques and it is ideally suited for the 3D outcomes required by Building Information Modelling.
Scanning to BIM, captures the reality of a site in much higher levels of detail than even a feature survey’s. This can be added to the BIM model if required, or at a later date by leaving the scan cloud available you can allow future BIM developers use that data to increase the value of your future deliverable’s. The scan can provide critical information often overlooked during the planning stages. This mitigates any risk when new buildings have to fit in with the environment and other buildings onsite.

Some things covered in this meeting include:
- The selection of the best machines for your project.
- The required LOD Spec for the 3d Model.
- Accuracy requirements.
Auxiliary information supplied to LSA .
Prior to mobilizing onsite we will ask to be provided with as much supporting documentation as possible. For example, layout drawings and photos.
We use this data to cross reference and for project planning of the scanning positions and it allows us to pick up minor errors in either the scans or the drawings that can be highlighted for the 3d modelling team.
Induction and site mobilization.
This generally is a short step where we review our/your safety procedures for various situation’s prior to undertaking any work on any site.
Depending on the project this step can be critical in achieving good overall accuracy of terrestrial scan data. This allows LSA to tie the scan data to a referenced global co-ordinate system.
During the discovery meeting this step will be discussed in terms of requirement’s and other options like drone or UAV survey that may deliver better results.
At this point we will be present on site with all the laser scanning equipment.
We will be gathering the 3D data required to complete the BIM/CAD model to your LOD (Level Of Detail) specification.
Post processing is a phrase used to cover, Alignment, Filtering, Cleaning, Stitching, Compression and geo-referencing
This is often overlooked by new customers as a small step but this is the most time consuming step of any laser scanning project.
Currently implementing ISO9001 quality systems LSA check every scanning project for deviations and discrepancies and these are addressed prior to delivery of files.
Having the reference information provided in Step 2 aids in the expediting of this process.
Conversion to clients CAD package.
This is another workflow that depending on software and requirements can take time but LSA have proven workflows for all major and most minor CAD packages.
LSA prefer to prepare this for the client so that the scanning process is a “plug and play” feeling.
New Clients sometimes at this point also need training to learn how to utilize cad data in the best way.
Delivery of data.
Using FTP servers and media drives we get the data to you in the fastest possible way. Our scanning projects file sizes range between 1 GB – 4.5TB
Depending on the type of project a client review may be undertaken to ensure you’re able to use the data easily and identify any issues we may be able to resolve for current and future projects.
